Why repurposing content for your blog?
For several reasons, all very valid, for example:
- Advancement of your online positioning both from an SEO and content point of view
- don’t have outmoded arguments that work against you and are no longer in line with yourself and your business now-a-days
- have new thoughts, articles every week with fresh, efficient and revisited contents, starting from the evergreen ones.
Here are the basic steps to update an old blog post .
Update the text and content of the article
Updating the text of the old blogpost means rewriting it with your recent tone of voice which I am in no doubt is different from the one you used previously. The more you write blog posts, the more your writing capacity becomes refined and improved with your practice, and so does your tone of voice.
When evaluating the text of the article, take the chance to add and update:
- links and numerous resources
- cover image and other images inside the article
- procedures of different kinds that have changed over time or no longer be present
- advice and new, updated tips
- phrases and sayings that used to fit in to you and now don’t
- call to action at the end of the article
You would end up with a definitely new and more helpful article for your reader .
Find a new keyword and rebuild your SEO
Once you have updated the texts and contents of the old blog posts, you will need to select a new keyword connected to the new content or perhaps search for it for the first time , if you had published the old article without doing SEO.
The first thing to do is to find the new keyword to insert:
- inside the updated article
- in the Yoast SEO box
- in the article’s permalink
Set redirect from old article to new one
If the link of your old article is changed, inserting a new keyword. You must set the redirect this link from the old URL to the new one , to avoid the 404 page not existed error message appearing both to the readers of that blog posts and to Google which will understand that the article has not disappeared, but has simply altered address.
Let’s take an example
My client Julian, who runs her blog Techybomb , revised an old article that had this link: techybomb/wordpress-blog and which was no longer suitable for her.
By doing keyword research he found the new keyword WordPress Article for the blog post and inserted it in the article permalink. Now his article has this new url: techybomb/wordpress-article. To do this you need to install the Redirection plugin and do the redirection.
Change publication day and time
Once you have reorganized the old article, I suggest that you should change the day and time of publication and insert today’s time, the day you did the complete revision.
In this way, the new article will appear as the last article inserted in the main page of the blog and will give Google an extra push to optimize it as best as promising and readers a new reading plan.
Within the article, if you wish for transparency, you can insert a note at the end and state that this article was originally available years ago and that it has been updated as of today.
